Duty of the Position

Position Summary
1. Accountable for cultivating and sustaining a professional practice environment for Vidant Medical Center nursing that
includes leading all aspects of the ANCC Journey to Magnet Excellence, Magnet Designation and Magnet Re-designation
Processes. Responsible for the Magnet application submission, leading processes for writing the Magnet document,
electronic submission of the Magnet Document to the American Nurses Credentialing Center and site visit preparation.

2. Submit the two year interim report. Evaluate nurse sensitive indicator data, organizational quality outcomes and
national benchmarks to assure Vidant Medical Center data is better than national benchmarks.

3. Administer Specialty Certification programs and contracts, track, trend & disseminate specialty certification and
advanced degree data. Accountable to assure data are disseminated and enculturated across nursing.

4. Assess, implement and develop structures and processes for successful Journey to Magnet Excellence activities.

5. Lead efforts to sustain a culture of nursing excellence and exemplary professional practice that aligns with the Magnet
Model components, nursing goals, and organizational strategic goals.

6. Lead a group of clinical nurse specialists to continuously advance nursing practice.

7. Responsible for budgeting dollars for external consultants and internal Magnet Re-designation partnerships.

8. Develop, disseminate, educate and mentor nurses at all levels of the organization regarding the sources of evidence
and Magnet Model Components.

9. Facilitate structures and processes for an effective shared decision making model to support exemplary professional
practice, quality care and patient outcomes.

10. Responsible for building strong professional relationships with other nursing communities and professional
organizations as well as external consultants such as the American Nurses Credentialing Center and Magnet Recognition
Program to enhance a culture of excellence.

11. Serves as a resource to nurses at all levels of the organization, for the benefit of promoting and sustaining exemplary
nursing professional practice and dissemination of evidence based nursing practices.

12. Resource, consultant and collaborator with other Magnet Program Directors across the state of North Carolina.

Position responsibilities

Essential Job Functions

Dir, Professional Practice and Magnet Program
1. Oversees the process of cultivating and sustaining a professional practice environment
a. Facilitate processes and submits the Magnet application, document, organizational demographic tool, two
year annual report and re-designation documents

b. Facilitates the development of data bases to track nursing certification and degree level goals, the nursing
annual report and nurse sensitive indicator data

c. Serve as a mentor to nursing staff, nurse leaders and members of the healthcare team regarding a culture of
Magnet

d. Advise senior leaders regarding Magnet principles and processes

e. Serves as Magnet advisor to the nursing leadership team

2. Ensure that nurse sensitive indicators, organizational quality outcomes and nurse satisfaction and
engagement data are disseminated and enculturated across the organization. Partners closely with the Vidant
Medical Center NDNQI coordinator and nurse executive for hospital quality and patient safety and the nursing
quality of care, evidence based practice and research council

a. Accountable for the shared governance/shared decision making structures, processes.

b. Facilitate evaluative processes within the council groups to continuously develop, improve and assess
efficiencies and effectiveness
c. Responsible for assuring council structures and processes align with organizational goals and objectives

d. Accountable for assuring best evidence is utilized to guide nursing practice

e. Collaborates with quality, patient safety and the center for learning and performance to enhance autonomy in
best evidence, innovation, improvement, efficiency and effectiveness

3. Lead Journey to Magnet Excellence and subsequent re-designation structures and processes
a. Influence and inspire staff at all levels through unit based, service line and organizational shared decision
making structures and activities that drives exceptional nursing practice outcomes

b. Serves as an expert consultant to drive nursing practice innovations across the organization

4. Assess, implement and evaluate shared decision making processes

a. Lead the development of goals and metrics in collaboration with council co-chairs. Strategize to assist all
councils in meeting and exceeding the shared vision and metrics for nursing and organizational excellence.

5. Builds strong professional relationships and networking opportunities

a. External consultants, internal consultants, the American Nurses Credentialing Center, specialty organizations
and other Magnet Program Directors

6. Contributes to the body of nursing knowledge

a. Lead processes for continuous professional development and education to staff and leadership regarding the
essence of Magnet and the Magnet Model components

b. Disseminate best practices, research articles and best evidence useful to support exemplary professional
practice

c. Conducts and presents research

7. Serves as a resource, consultant and collaborator with other Magnet Program Directors across the state of
North Carolina

8. Lead a group of clinical nurse specialists

Job Conditions

The heaviest weight lifted by this worker is a 10.3 pounds, or 2 reams of paper, which is generally lifted between floor and waist height above the ground when performing the job. The frequency of lifting over the course of a normal workday would be classified as occasional. It is also important to understand weights lifted at greater frequencies are lighter in nature.

The work of this team member is performed indoors in a healthcare facility.

The worker is required to wear PPE consistent with the nature of the work. On occasion the worker may be required to wear a mask.

Qualifications

Minimum Position Requirements

BSN, MSN required; Doctorate in Nursing (PhD or DNP) preferred.

RN License required.

More than 5 years clinical experience, professional practice and development, research, and quality and leadership is
required.
