Duty of the Position

Provides assistance with activities of daily living, housekeeping, personal laundry, and companionship provided to an individual in his or her personal residence, which are intended to enable that individual to remain safely and comfortably in his or her own personal residence. The Companion works under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse, or other professional person to provide a supplementary service in carrying out a service plan.
Home services are focused on providing assistance that is not medical in nature, but is based upon assisting the client in meeting the demands of living independently and maintaining a personal residence, such as companionship, cleaning, laundry, shopping, meal preparation, dressing, and bathing.

Position responsibilities

Observation of client functioning and reporting changes to his or her supervisor or employer or to a person designated by the client;
Assistance with household chores, including cooking and meal preparation, cleaning and laundry;
Assistance in completing activities such as shopping and appointments outside of the home;
Companionship
Completion of appropriate records documenting service provision; and
Assistance with activities of daily living and personal care.
Gives personal attention to the sick, disabled, and aged to help provide and, maintain, physical and emotional comfort, and to assist the individual toward independent living.
Assists in lessening the burden of prolonged illness physically, emotionally, and/or economically.
Assists in keeping the family together while the mother/father, or other caregiver, is ill or absent from the home.
Works toward hastening convalescence and reducing the length of stay, in an institution, by permitting the individual to remain at home, or to return home sooner than would otherwise be possible.
Enables the ill, disabled, or frail aged person to remain in his/her own home, among familiar surroundings.
Has empathy for the needs of the ill, elderly, injured, frail, and impaired.

Job Conditions

Home visits are part of the job function. Must be able to access clients' homes, which will not be routinely wheelchair accessible.
May be required to bend, stoop, reach; lift and/or carry up to 30 pounds.
The position requires the ability to travel, extensively, in a geographic area. If traveling by car, must possess a valid driver's license and adequate car insurance.
Hearing, eyesight, and physical dexterity must be sufficient to perform duties, understand, and communicate with the client/family and demonstrate client care.
There must be the ability to give and receive information, orally, and to use the telephone. Must be able to adequately document care provided, in English.

Company Operation

Has access to all client medical records which may be discussed with the Registered Nurse and the Nurse Supervisor.

Qualifications

1. Preferably a high school diploma or GED.
2. Must have completed an agency training program & orientation
3. Must have at least one-year experience, either work, or life, experience, as a companion.
4. Must have a current criminal clearance that satisfies the Agency, local, state, and federal statutes.
5. Must be free from health problems that may be injurious to patient, self, and co-workers and must present appropriate evidence to substantiate this.
6. Must understand and respect client’s, including ethics and confidentiality of care.
7. Must have current CPR certification
